We have many wonderful in-home support carers at Heather. This month, on Aged Care Employee Day, we spotlight two amazing team members, Adeline and Debbi. Aged Care Employee Day, celebrates the thousands of dedicated workers, supporting millions of older Australians in aged care, retirement living and seniors housing.
We love being apart of the Aged Care support community, as do our carers! We reached out to two of our longstanding team members to ask them what they find most rewarding about working with our clients.
Meet Adeline
Adeline has been with Heather Senior Care since 2010.
1. What aspects of your job in Aged Cared do you find most rewarding?
“Caring for my clients, whatever they may need. Giving the support when they really need it at this time in their life. That is why we are called support workers; we assist with the things they can’t do anymore.”
2. What’s the best thing that happened to you at work this month?
“One of my newer clients was unwell previously, but when I saw her this week she had all the smiles. This is the real her. She was so open and smiling, laughing and talking about her experiences. I love this.”
3. Describe what working in Aged Care is like in three words.
“Awareness, Commitment, Compassion!”
4. What drew you to this field, and how did you get started?
“Back in the Philippines, my mum was very sick. During her final days, I had to fly back home to care for her, as I was the closest among my siblings. She passed in myarms. I prayed, asking God to give me a purpose connected to caring for the elderly, feeling that the time I had with her wasn’t enough.
Not long after losing mum, I studied practical nursing in the Philippines and completed the course. Around the same time, my sister in Australia asked me to come and help her.
Her husband had stage 4 cancer, and she had a small baby. While in Australia, I met a man and later returned to marry him. I also met Joyce(Heather’s mother) while completing my aged care studies. She was very supportive. I met her again during my practical placement, and she offered me a job at Heather Senior Care. Joyce told me, “If you don’t like working with us, I’ll help you find something else.”… And here I am today.
Meet Debbie
Adeline has been with Heather Senior Care since 2010.
1. What aspects of your job in Aged Care do you find most rewarding?
“When you meet a clients needs and they feel that their needs are met.”
2. What’s the best thing that happened to you at work this month?
“A new client who I had only just met told me how comfortable she was with me. That I don’t make her feel embarrassed when she needs assistance. She is happy that we are able to provide regular carers and times which she wasn’t used to receiving previously.”
3. Describe what working in Aged Care is like in three words.
“Very Rewarding Job”
4. What drew you to this field, and how did you get started?
“I started in the kitchen at an Aged Care Home and, after a job appraisal, they
asked if I would be interested in doing a course in Assistant Nursing. When I moved to Queensland, I started doing Home Care. I prefer it to Aged Care as it is not as regimented. There is a lot more time to get to know the clients.”
Debbie has been working in the Aged Care sector for over 30 years. She has been a part of the Heather Senior Care team as a Home Carer and Support Worker for half of that time!
